“We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time.”
- T.S. Eliot
Before embarking on the path of becoming an art therapist, I obtained a degree in graphic design and advertising through the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Soon, however, I realized my passion for art could be put to better use by healing minds, rather than coercing people into buying things. Given the stigmas that prevent people from seeking mental health support, I recognized a strong need for gentle, unintimidating counseling. Through this, I became inspired to pursue a career in art therapy.
I spent the early part of my career working at inpatient programs with children and adolescents. In this role, I observed the long-term impact of attachment disorders, trauma, grief, depression, and anxiety. Having experienced my own struggles with body image, physical capabilities, creative capabilities, and imposter syndrome both as a competitive athlete and during my undergraduate studies at FIT, I can relate to my child and teen clients in a meaningful way.
Now, as an art therapist in group practice, I continue to draw from both personal and professional experiences when working with clients. Being a full-time working parent of three, I not only understand the pressures that kids can feel—I can identify with parents as well.
My therapeutic approach revolves around self-advocacy and the client-counselor relationship. The beginning of treatment typically involves building a strong rapport with my clients, allowing them to explore and process their relational patterns. Because I bring an attachment focus to my work, I aim to foster feelings of trust and safety between myself and my clients.
I find that art therapy increases self-awareness. A new understanding can be achieved by exploring the innermost yet nonverbal parts of the self. Creativity offers different ways of looking at old problems, increasing compassion and self-worth. It also opens the door for more effective coping strategies, which can help ease feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, and self-doubt.
In addition to being a seasoned art therapist, I possess a strong skill set in talk therapy. Artistic mediums can be helpful for emotional exploration but talking through those emotions can be equally meaningful in understanding them. I’ve been told that my strength as a clinician is not only guiding clients through the creative process but also offering ample emotional support in gently challenging the outdated narratives that no longer serve my clients. I also pride myself in my leadership positions, often acting as a sounding board for fellow clinicians.
When I’m not working, I am usually knee-deep in some sort of home- or family-oriented project. Surprising others with events or outings that I’ve planned is something I always look forward to. And in my free time, I am constantly reorganizing my home or making changes to reduce some of the chaos of life that three children bring!
